Story
I'm taking part in the 2013 Melbourne Marathon Festival and hoping to raise much needed funds for charity.
This October, I’m going to be sweating it out and doing my best to complete a gruelling course through the streets of Melbourne and ending back at the world famous 'G!
I am honoured to be a part of this amazing race and helping a great cause, and I’d really appreciate your support in this endeavour.
Thank you for your support and helping to make a difference
Independent Living Unit in Rehabilitation – St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne
Inpatient rehabilitation provides a goal based therapy program that assists individuals with a wide range of conditions to improve their ability to complete functional activities. Each patient has a highly individualised program tailored to their specific needs that is carried out over a 24hr period, 7 days a week.
An Independent Living Unit (ILU) is an exciting prospect for St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne Rehabilitation Unit. An ILU will provide patients with the opportunity to transfer and practice the skills learnt in therapy to an environment more similar to home. In some cases this will help build an individual’s confidence or give the individual a chance to demonstrate their independence and problem solve any difficulties prior to discharge with the rehabilitation team.
Some of the therapies that are included in a program are:
· Managing Medications
· Mobility - in/out of bed, around the unit and in the community
· Personal care – grooming, showering and dressing
· Cognitive retraining – emails, use of internet, banking, managing timetable of therapies
· Communication – using a telephone or computer
· Nutrition – preparation of nutritionally balanced meals
- opportunity to prepare meals that are more culturally attuned to the individual
· Cooking – menu planning, shopping, preparation and cooking of all meals.
This is the final “hospital” phase as an individual transitions back into the community. Rehabilitation is the bridge that facilitates this transition and an Independent Living Unit at St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne will increase the confidence of individuals and their carers / families as they continue their journey back home

St Vincent’s Hospital (Melbourne) Ltd
Community support and generosity have been central to the story of St Vincent’s since our beginnings as a small cottage hospital in 1890s Fitzroy. Back then, we relied entirely on charitable donations to survive and thrive. Over 100 years later, we take our place as Victoria’s leading teaching hospital, with over 7,000 staff providing the best possible medical, surgical, emergency, mental health, palliative and aged care services to patients from backgrounds of all kinds.
In the last year alone, the St Vincent’s team have performed Australia’s first hand transplant, developed the world’s first warning device for epileptic seizures and opened an amazing new state-of-the-art Cancer Centre. For these reasons and many more, we are recognised locally and internationally for excellence in health care, research and innovation.
All this would not be possible without the continuing tradition of amazing community giving and support. We receive 70 per cent of our funding from government and bridge the gap in large part thanks to the generosity of our donors. With your help, we have the means to secure the best medical staff, technology and facilities for all our patients. Many thanks for your support!
